TENTATIVE PROJECT:

To improve the quality of life for spinal injury persons with the aid of computers.

PARTICIPANTS QUERIED:

• STC, National & Central Ohio Chapter http://www.centralohiostc.org/index.html - to help with technical communication in the project.
• Columbus State Community College (CSCC) – Technical Communication Department - for technological guidance and assistance, computer labs and students to help with research.
• Columbus Medical Equipment http://columbusmedical.com - to help with equipment and offer services from a staff member who has spinal column injury and is a consultant who adapts special equipment to special needs people.
• Mental Health Association of Franklin County (MHAFC) – to help with mental aspects of the disability in relation to the project.
• Rotary Club of Hilliard, Ohio www.hilliardrotary.org - to help provide leadership for the project (ex: legal, accounting, etc.) and broaden our reach via International humanitarian service.
• Opera Columbus http://operacols.org – to incorporate their therapeutic recreational program in with our project.
• Moving Ahead Communications – to help with research and documentation.

GRANT WRITER:

Diana Barnum is a former Technical Communication student at CSCC and current Master of Business Administration with eCommerce student at Baker College (online through Michigan). Barnum will voluntarily write up the proposal and coordinate activities so that all parties can meet via virtual and/or real-world time. Her Grant experience includes awarding of over $8,000 in funding and education for college students, approximately 97% funding of complete hospital, before and after care expenses of a child whose parents had no insurance (approx. $5,000), and special program funding for children’s extracurricular activities; such as an educational camp program and special violin lessons through an OSU (Ohio State University) youth music program. Barnum is the president of Moving Ahead Communications, marketing company in Hilliard, Ohio, and an active volunteer for the MHAFC, a Rotarian and serves on the STC Central Ohio Board as a newsletter editor.

GRANT CONSULTANT:

Rod Backus, Director of Development for the Opera Columbus http://operacols.org has agreed to be a consultant for the project. He coordinates Grant projects for Opera Columbus and his experience includes work with Creation Unlimited in Delaware, working with children and adults with physical & developmental disabilities.

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS QUERIED:

To aid in project. Some project needs include: software development and testing, accounting, technology for physical aids / adaptations, research into needs and possible solutions for those with spinal injuries, extension possibilities with our work, legal representation for project.

NOTE:

Upon completion of the project, we can discuss pursuing additional funding from other sources for possible extension work and outreach. Other sources include Federal, State and local Government opportunities, Foundation grants and funding from within other areas of participants’ organizations.
